The Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) is one of the largest engineering institutes in the country. Although the rural development program was started in the 80's, its scope has expanded considerably over time. Starting from the remote areas of the country, LGED has a huge work force in the city limits.

The contribution that LGED has made in mobilizing the rural economy through road connectivity and development of hat-bazaars and growth centers in rural areas is visible today. The contribution of these infrastructures in achieving the growing growth of the country is immense. Today, the people of remote villages are getting the benefit of using paved roads within a maximum of two kilometers. These rural infrastructures are playing a huge role in improving the living standards of the people and alleviating poverty.

Apart from rural infrastructure development, LGED is also contributing to the development of physical infrastructure in urban and suburban areas. LGED is also involved in providing technical assistance to urban local government organizations (municipalities and city corporations) and improving the management and efficiency of these organizations.


 LGED is also playing a significant role in increasing the agricultural and fish production of the country by implementing small scale water resource development projects across the country. With the participation of local stakeholders in these projects, project formulation and implementation and operation and maintenance are creating short and long term employment opportunities for low income people.


 LGED's agenda includes developing rural and urban infrastructure at the local level, as well as maintaining these infrastructures and providing technical assistance to local government organizations on a variety of issues. At the same time, LGED provides necessary technical assistance to various ministries.


LGED conducts regular training activities for its own officers / employees, local government bodies and other stakeholders in the formulation of development projects, preparation of infrastructure databases, maps, technical specifications, manuals, etc.
